today’s toon – bc teacher strike

BC teachers are on strike, talks seem stalled. Schools still closed. Parents scrambling to find daycare. Government has promised parents $40 (per child? – not sure) per day towards daycare.

today’s toon – tropical storm ana

Sorry about last few weeks – various things in the way. Today’s toon concerns the enormous worry everyone had about the tail of Tropical Storm Ana hitting the coast. We have – er – significant weather – but certainly not a hurricane type situation.

Happy Hallowe’en, Happy Municipal Voting Day to Ontario people (I’m assuming Ford Light won’t be taking office?!!) – our vote is a bit later.

today’s toon – the slate

The incumbent mayor, Dave Formosa, took out a full page ad in the paper (he’s in again as no one opposed him). After going on at length about his many marvellous accomplishments in past term, he then said, “Also, I am very concerned and disheartened to hear that we have a ‘slate’ running in this election.” Then went on to urge PR to vote the existing council back into office.

(PS There is no party, slate, cabal or any other covert or overt conspiracy running for city council – though a few of them ARE friends, have been for years.)

today’s toon – new library!

Municipal elections over and the people voted in some new excellent councillors… and in a separate referendum question, FINALLY voted to ok the city to borrow 3 million or something to build a NEW LIBRARY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 76% in favour! (Unbelievable!! After over 25 yrs of dickering!! And running the tiny public library out of the very cramped basement of City Hall.)

today’s toon – library flooding

Very heavy rains over past several days have caused many basements to flood. Including our beleaguered library which is still located in the basement of city hall. (Wasn’t as bad as comic – they mopped it up and were only closed for 3 days. No books were harmed. Still…). Perhaps we’ll actually have a new building before next year’s rains.
